Erosion Control

Soil erosion is one of the biggest challenges our Fellows face. Because of Rwanda’s steep slopes and heavy rainfall, combating erosion in coffee farms can be the difference between a growing farm and business, and an insufficient harvest. However, there are many ways to fight erosion, such as mulching, terracing, contour planting, incorporating shade trees and cover crops, and more. As soil is kept in place, so is rain water, ensuring that runoff is not excessive and that water is conserved to nourish the plants. We provide Erosion Control Training to our Fellows in order to equip them with the knowledge they need to properly protect their land, and therefore their livelihood.
